Disney Announces ‘Kingdom Hearts’ Series for Disney+ at D23
More than two decades after its debut, Disney is officially bringing the iconic Kingdom Hearts franchise beyond the world of video games.
During the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event on Friday, August 14, Disney revealed that a Kingdom Hearts series is coming to Disney+, marking a major new chapter for the long-running collaboration between Disney and Square Enix.
The announcement was accompanied by Kingdom Hearts imagery during the showcase, though Disney has yet to reveal many details surrounding the project. A premiere date, episode count, creative team, voice cast, and further information about the series’ story have not been announced.
First launched in 2002, Kingdom Hearts introduced players to Sora, a Keyblade-wielding hero whose journey connects original characters and mythology with worlds and familiar faces drawn from Disney properties. Across more than two decades, the franchise has expanded through numerous games while building an increasingly expansive mythology around Sora, Riku, Kairi, and their battle between light and darkness.
A screen adaptation has also been the subject of speculation for years, making Disney’s D23 reveal a particularly significant development for fans who have long hoped to see the franchise explored in another medium. The timing also comes as Disney places an increased spotlight on Kingdom Hearts throughout this year’s D23 festivities. A dedicated “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts” presentation is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, celebrating the franchise and the creative partnership between Disney, Pixar, and Square Enix.
With a Disney+ series now officially joining the franchise’s future, the upcoming panel could offer fans their next opportunity to learn more about what Disney has planned for Sora and the worlds connected by the Keyblade. But regardless of what we learn tomorrow, one thing is certain: there’s still plenty of Kingdom Hearts content to come.
