The Marvel Universe is entering a new era following the conclusion of Avengers: Armageddon, with two upcoming comics set to explore the crossover's lasting consequences. Marvel has revealed new covers and story details for Immortal Soldiers #1 and Avengers #3, teasing Bucky Barnes' mysterious return alongside Nick Fury Sr. and a major confrontation between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Mephisto.
Both stories emerge from the aftermath of Avengers: Armageddon, which concluded October 21 and left the world increasingly distrustful of superheroes following Red Hulk's devastating campaign. Building on developments from Chip Zdarsky's Captain America run, the fallout will continue into a relaunched Avengers series featuring an unconventional lineup of Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Wolverine, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Miracleman.
Here's everything we know about the stories ahead.
Bucky Barnes Returns in Immortal Soldiers
Bucky Barnes' apparent death during the battle against Red Hulk has since been reversed, although the circumstances of his resurrection remain mysterious. Immortal Soldiers #1 will explore his unexpected return and the involvement of Nick Fury Sr., who brought him back for a mission with potentially far-reaching consequences.
Written by Zdarsky with artwork by Christian Rosado, the one-shot reunites two characters with extensive histories in Marvel's espionage world. Bucky's years as the Winter Soldier and Fury's experience directing covert operations make their partnership particularly intriguing, especially as Marvel prepares to establish a new status quo following Armageddon.
First announced at New York Comic Con, Immortal Soldiers #1 arrives January 13, 2027, with a main cover by Ben Harvey.
Spider-Man's Avengers Face Mephisto
Meanwhile, Avengers #3 will begin a new storyline titled "Chase the Devil," as Spider-Man's recently assembled team confronts Mephisto following his assault on Earth. Marvel also teases the involvement of unexpected allies working alongside the demonic villain.
The confrontation connects to Zdarsky's Captain America storyline, which brought Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom together against Mephisto in Hell. It also introduces an especially complicated adversary for Spider-Man, whose history with Mephisto includes the infamous One More Day storyline that erased Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's marriage from continuity.
Zdarsky reunites with acclaimed Daredevil collaborator Marco Checchetto for the new Avengers series, launching November 4, 2026. The third issue follows on January 27, with Checchetto providing interior artwork and the main cover, as the team’s confrontation with Mephisto promises to deepen the consequences of Armageddon and set the stage for further upheaval across the Marvel Universe.
