A 50-Year Story Across Five Cities

What do we know so far? For starters, the game follows Makoto Daito, a young man born in the United States to an American father and Japanese mother. After losing both parents at a young age and facing prejudice in the West, Makoto stows away on a ship in 1915 in an attempt to reach Japan. There, his life becomes tied to Yu Shinjo, another young man of mixed heritage, and Orpheus, a smuggler played by Snoop Dogg.

Stranger Than Heaven will span five decades, following Makoto through several eras and locations in Japan. The game begins in Kokura, Fukuoka in 1915, before moving to Kure, Hiroshima in 1929, Minami, Osaka in 1943, Atami, Shizuoka in 1951, and Shinjuku, Tokyo in 1965. Each location is inspired by real Japanese cities and built around a different period of cultural and social change.

The story also weaves in music and showbusiness as central parts of Makoto’s rise. According to the broadcast, Makoto has a talent for hearing music in everyday life, with players able to collect sounds from the world around them and use them in original compositions. These showbusiness elements will also include scouting performers, organizing shows, selecting musicians, and building setlists.

Cast and Combat Details Confirmed

The newly revealed cast includes Yu Shirota as Makoto Daito, Dean Fujioka as Yu Shinjo, Snoop Dogg as Orpheus, Moeka Hoshi, Tori Kelly, Akio Otsuka, Tokuma Nishioka, Satoshi Fujihara, Cordell Broadus, Ado, and the late Bunta Sugawara, whose character is voiced by Takashi Ukaji. Sega said Sugawara’s appearance was created with formal consent from his family and materials provided by Toei Company.

The publisher also introduced a new combat system built specifically for Stranger Than Heaven. Players will control Makoto’s left and right sides independently, using the shoulder buttons and triggers for different limbs. The system includes charged attacks, blocks, counters, tackles, finishing moves, and a variety of weapons, including knives, hammers, mallets, katanas, and other period-specific tools.

Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch this winter for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam, and PlayStation 5. It will also be available day one through Xbox Game Pass and will support Xbox Play Anywhere.
