The Ghost in the Shell Trailer Teases a Bold New Take on the Cyberpunk Classic
Ghost in the Shell is making its return. A brand-new trailer has dropped for THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, the upcoming anime series from Science SARU, confirming that the cyberpunk franchise’s latest chapter will premiere in Japan on July 7, 2026.
Based on Masamune Shirow’s influential manga, which first launched in 1989, Ghost in the Shell remains one of anime and science fiction’s most recognizable properties. Across multiple animated films, television series, and live-action adaptations, the franchise has explored the blurred boundaries between humanity, technology, identity, and control. This new series marks a fresh take on that world, with Science SARU, the studio behind Inu-Oh, The Colors Within, and DAN DA DAN, bringing its distinct visual sensibility to the material.
Set in 2029, THE GHOST IN THE SHELL takes place in a near-future Japan where networks and micromachine technology have rapidly advanced. At the center of the story is Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg who leads Public Security Section 9, described in this version as an offensive unit known as the “Shell Squad.” Their mission is to stop threats before they escalate, but their latest investigation draws them into a larger cybercrime mystery involving the Puppet Master, an unidentified hacker operating at the center of the case.
The newly released trailer leans into that blend of tactical action, cyberpunk atmosphere, and psychological tension, spotlighting Section 9 in the field while teasing the larger questions that have long defined Ghost in the Shell. Rather than simply reintroducing the franchise’s familiar imagery, the footage suggests a version that is both rooted in the original manga’s core ideas and shaped by Science SARU’s energetic approach to animation. The creative team includes director Mokochan, scriptwriter EnJoe Toh, character designer and executive animation director Shuhei Handa, and music from Taisei Iwasaki, Ryo Konishi, and YUKI KANESAKA. The title logo was designed by Hajime Sorayama.
