Nintendo Reveals New Star Fox Game for Switch 2 During Surprise Direct

Nintendo has officially announced Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2, bringing Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team back in a new action adventure based on Star Fox 64. The game was revealed during the Star Fox Direct presentation on May 6, with Nintendo confirming that it will launch exclusively for Switch 2.

The new game is described by Nintendo as a cinematic take on the Star Fox 64 story, complete with a full visual overhaul, updated character designs, newly revamped stages, detailed cutscenes, fully voiced dialogue, and an orchestral soundtrack. The story once again centers on Fox McCloud and his crew as they take on Andross, who is threatening the Lylat System.

New Modes and Switch 2 Features

Along with its campaign, Star Fox will include a Challenge Mode, allowing players to replay cleared stages with new objectives, as well as a new Battle Mode built around 4-vs-4 dogfights. Battle Mode supports up to eight players divided between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf, with match types set across Corneria, Fichina, and Sector Y.

Nintendo also highlighted several Switch 2-specific features, including Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for more precise aiming in Campaign and Challenge modes. The game will also support GameChat features, including interactive Star Fox character avatars that mirror player expressions and movements, plus AR filters inspired by characters like Fox and Falco.

A Modern Return to the Lylat System

The campaign will let players travel through planets, asteroid fields, and dogfighting sequences, with branching routes affected by objectives completed, enemies defeated, and other in-game actions. Nintendo says players will be able to revisit missions to discover different paths and unlock medals, with an Expert difficulty available after meeting the required goals.

The game’s official store listing confirms support for TV, tabletop, and handheld play, with single-system play for one to two players and online support for up to eight players. The listing also confirms GameShare support for both online and local play, with Nintendo Switch 2 required to initiate a GameShare session.

Star Fox is now listed for release on June 25, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. The game is published by Nintendo and carries an ESRB rating of Fantasy Violence and Users Interact.
