Marvel Comics and Star Wars have shared a publishing history spanning nearly five decades, but their respective heroes and villains are finally preparing to cross paths in Star Wars | Marvel: Hope Assembles. Arriving this January, the six-issue series from writer Kevin Smith and artist David Marquez will bring the events of the original Star Wars film into Earth-616, the primary continuity of the Marvel Comics universe, creating an unusual meeting of characters whose adventures have largely unfolded in separate worlds.
And with the debut approaching, Marvel has released a promising new preview of what’s to come, giving readers an early glimpse of the long-awaited crossover.
A Shared History Comes Full Circle
Marvel's relationship with Star Wars dates back to 1977, when the publisher released its original comic book adaptation more than a month before the film reached theaters. The partnership continued through years of original stories and adaptations, eventually entering a new era in 2015 when Marvel resumed publishing Star Wars comics.
Now, as the franchise approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027, Hope Assembles marks another milestone in that relationship, bringing characters from both universes together in their first official crossover.
"One of the most exciting things about this series is seeing familiar moments through an entirely new lens," editor Mark Paniccia said in Marvel's announcement. "Kevin Smith and David Marquez understand exactly what makes these characters so enduring, and they find surprising, emotional, and often exhilarating ways to bring them together."
Darth Vader Meets the Infinity Gauntlet
Marvel is also introducing a themed variant cover program that will run throughout the six-issue series, with recurring categories exploring different combinations of the two franchises. Alongside character pairings and unlikely confrontations, the artwork will revisit recognizable scenes, exchange iconic weapons and costumes, and pay tribute to the publisher's comic book history.
The announced cover categories include:
Cover A — Main Cover: A series of connecting covers illustrated by David Marquez.
Cover B — Alliance Variant: Marvel heroes and villains join forces with their Star Wars counterparts.
Cover C — Battle Variant: One-on-one showdowns between characters from both universes.
Cover D — A New Hope Variant: Familiar scenes from the original film recreated with Marvel characters.
Cover E — Crossover Variant: Characters take up the weapons, costumes, and symbols associated with the other franchise.
Cover F — Retro Variant: New artwork inspired by the style of Marvel's original Star Wars comic book run.
Cover G — Marvel Homage: Classic Marvel covers reimagined with characters from both properties.
Among the artwork highlighted in the announcement is Rafael Albuquerque's Crossover Variant, first showcased at New York Comic Con, which depicts Darth Vader wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. The image brings together two formidable elements of their respective universes, offering a playful example of the creative possibilities behind the crossover.
The debut issue will also feature covers by David Marquez, Alex Ross, Kaare Andrews, Cory Smith, Dan Jurgens, and Matteo Lolli, giving collectors several different artistic interpretations to choose from.
Star Wars | Marvel: Hope Assembles #1 arrives at comic shops on January 13, 2027, with the newly released preview also set to appear in select Marvel titles ahead of publication.
