Everything We Know About the Upcoming Live-Action Scooby Doo Series

Jinkies! Fans of the mystery-solving gang may have reason to celebrate as rumors swirl about a new Scooby-Doo series in development.

While official details remain scarce, it’s been reported that Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind the iconic franchise, is exploring fresh ways to bring Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. crew back to screens in collaboration with Netflix. Here’s a rundown of what’s being discussed and why this news has Scooby enthusiasts buzzing.

Scooby Doo (2002) | Warner Bros.

A Legacy of Mysteries

Since its debut in 1969 with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears for Hanna-Barbera, the Scooby-Doo franchise has been a cultural staple. The original animated series followed Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers, and their lovable Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, as they unraveled spooky mysteries in the Mystery Machine, often revealing crooks behind supernatural facades.

Over the decades, the franchise has evolved through countless animated series, direct-to-video films, and two perfect live-action theatrical movies in 2002 and 2004. With such a rich history, any hint of a new project naturally sparks excitement.

What do we Know?

As stated earlier, the series is said to be live-action, and helmed by both Warner Bros. Television and Netflix, with plans to place the title at Netflix. The full team has yet to be announced; however, news of its existence is likely to get the ball rolling in the coming months. That being said, the series is being helmed by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, known for Netflix’s underrated live-action version of Cowboy Bebop, alongside DC/Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.

Though, of course, the franchise’s recent outings, like the 2020 animated film Scoob! and the 2023 Velma series, shows Warner Bros.’ willingness to collaborate with top talent to keep the brand relevant.

Why Now?

The timing feels right for a Scooby-Doo revival. Nostalgia-driven reboots are thriving, and the franchise’s mix of humor, mystery, and heart appeals to both kids and adults who grew up with the gang. Streaming platforms, hungry for content that bridges generations, could see Scooby-Doo as a perfect fit. Plus, with advancements in visual effects, a live-action series—something fans have clamored for since the early 2000s films—could bring Scooby’s world to life like never before.

But also, we would have been even more thrilled with a third film from James Gunn and the original cast. It had to be said!
