The Mortuary Assistant Brings the Hit Horror Game to Shudder This Month
Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for The Mortuary Assistant, giving horror fans a new look at the film adaptation of Brian Clarke’s 2022 popular indie game ahead of its streaming debut on March 27.
Directed by Jeremiah Kipp and written by Tracee Beebe and Clarke, the movie stars Willa Holland as Rebecca Owens, a newly certified mortician whose first overnight shift at River Field Mortuary turns into a terrifying battle against demonic forces. The adaptation had already been announced as part of Shudder’s 2026 lineup, but the trailer now offers the clearest sense yet of how the game’s dread-heavy atmosphere is being translated to screen.
The footage centers on Rebecca’s growing isolation inside the mortuary, where routine embalming work quickly gives way to supernatural chaos. Flickering lights, shifting bodies, ominous corridors, and sudden glimpses of possession all point to a film that wants to preserve the game’s claustrophobic fear while opening up its larger mythology.
Alongside Holland, the film also stars Paul Sparks as Rebecca’s boss, Raymond Delver. The project has been in development for several years now, but the trailer positions it as one of the more notable genre releases currently heading to Shudder, especially as horror game adaptations continue to gain momentum on screen.
With its funeral-home setting, possession-focused terror, and built-in cult following, The Mortuary Assistant already has the ingredients of a release horror fans will be watching closely this month.
