The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Reveals a First-Look at Yoshi
Illumination and Nintendo just dropped a fresh trailer for the Super Mario Bros. movie sequel, officially titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it finally delivers what the first film only teased in its post-credits: Yoshi is officially here!
The footage debuted during a Nintendo Direct presentation and teases the new adventure around a classic Mario problem with cosmic consequences. Mario and Luigi race into a desert region pulled straight from game iconography (including an Odyssey-style vibe) after reports of a “problematic” Warp Pipe, only to discover that the pipe is hiding the franchise’s most overdue reveal. Yoshi steps into the spotlight with a full cinematic entrance, positioning him as more than a cameo this time.
From there, the trailer starts stacking quick-hit character and world reveals: Birdo shows up, Luigi flashes the Frog Suit, and the movie embraces the chaos with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi entering the mix. There are also blink-and-you ’ll-miss-it nods to deeper cuts for more dedicated fans, including Mouser and familiar staples like Lakitu, plus set pieces that look built to bounce between wildly different environments instead of sticking to a single kingdom.
Behind the scenes, Nintendo and Illumination also shared a tangible progress update, mentioning that animation is complete and the film is now in post-production, with teams focused on sound and music. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are also back for the sequel, as is composer Brian Tyler, who’s recording with a 70-piece orchestra and folding themes from the Galaxy games into the score (with Skywalker Sound involved in the audio work).
There’s a very slight release-date shuffle, too: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now moves from April 3, 2026, to April 1, 2026, in the U.S. and many additional markets, with Japan set for April 24, 2026, and other territories rolling out across April. While we wait for the film to drop, check out the exciting new Yoshi tease, included below!
