Tenchi Muyo! Sequel Project Tenchi Galaxy Clears Kickstarter Goal
More than three decades after Tenchi Universe introduced its version of Tenchi Masaki’s chaotic intergalactic household, the characters are finally moving closer to another adventure. Armiger Entertainment has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Tenchi Galaxy, a 30-minute anime pilot described as a spiritual sequel to the 1995 television series, with several members of its original creative team and English voice cast returning. The campaign reached its $400,000 target in under 48 hours and has since surpassed a massive $500,000, unlocking all three of its initially announced stretch goals.
A New Mission for Tenchi and the Gang
As previewed in the concept art, Tenchi Galaxy will follow Tenchi, Ryoko, Ayeka, Sasami, Mihoshi, Washu, Kiyone, and Ryo-Ohki as they travel to Mikuni, a planet inhabited by space pirates. Their mission centers on recovering an artifact stolen from Jurai, bringing them into conflict with Niimi, the planet’s pirate queen.
The story will also explore a potential connection between Niimi and Ryoko, while the return of bounty hunter Nagi raises questions about which side she will ultimately support. Campaign artwork confirms that Nagi’s cabbit companion, Ken-Ohki, will be part of the project as well, bringing several characters closely associated with the Tenchi Universe continuity back together.
The pilot is based on an idea director Hiroshi Negishi developed years ago for a possible continuation. Negishi, who directed all 26 episodes of Tenchi Universe, will return to lead the project, with AIC president Toru Miura serving as executive producer. Franchise creator Masaki Kajishima is credited as the original author, while Ikuko Kogiso joins as co-producer, Phil Dragash handles character design, and Stephen Davis composes the music.
Original English Cast Members Return
Much of the established English cast will reprise their roles, including Matt K. Miller as Tenchi, Petrea Burchard as Ryoko, Rebecca Forstadt as Mihoshi, K.T. Vogt as Washu, Debi Derryberry as Ryo-Ohki, and Julia Fletcher as Nagi. Sherry Lynn will once again voice both Sasami and Detective Kiyone.
Cristina Vee joins the franchise as Ayeka, succeeding longtime English performer Jennifer Darling. Hololive English member Nerissa Ravencroft will voice Risa, a new space-pirate character whose name and design were developed with her involvement.
Early Support Expands the Pilot
After reaching its base goal, the campaign unlocked a Japanese-language track at $450,000. Armiger Entertainment plans to bring back as many members of the original Japanese cast as possible while hiring new performers for the project’s additional characters.
The campaign passed its $475,000 goal shortly afterward, adding a 4K version for eligible digital and physical tiers. Blu-ray backers will still receive their selected edition alongside a 4K disc, while qualifying digital supporters will receive both 1080p and 4K downloads. Passing $500,000 also secured an exciting documentary featurette covering the pilot’s production.
Rewards range from digital and standard Blu-ray editions to a campaign-exclusive SteelBook. Additional collectibles include an art book, vinyl record, posters, patches, sticker sheets, and a cute VHS edition containing both the English and Japanese versions of the pilot.
Although the Kickstarter guarantees a self-contained pilot rather than a full season, Armiger Entertainment hopes its performance will demonstrate enough demand to pursue a complete Tenchi Galaxy series with Negishi and Miura. Campaign materials currently identify 2028 as a tentative target for the larger production timeline. The Tenchi Galaxy Kickstarter remains open through September 7, 2026, at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
For now, the campaign offers the most exciting takeaway of all: Tenchi and the gang are officially preparing to return.
