Virtua Fighter Crossroads Showcase Gives Fans a Major Look at SEGA’s Next Fighting Game
SEGA and RGG Studio have officially pulled back the curtain on Virtua Fighter Crossroads, the newly revealed title for the project previously known as New Virtua Fighter Project. The game is being positioned as the next mainline entry in the long-running fighting series and is currently planned for release in 2027. The announcement arrived during Summer Game Fest 2026, where SEGA debuted a new promo video before directing fans to the dedicated VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS SHOWCASE.
For fans who missed the reveal, the showcase has been archived and offers a deeper look at what SEGA and RGG Studio are building. Led by producer and creative director Riichiro Yamada alongside members of the development team, the presentation explores the game’s new setting, Vilasapara, while also teasing the evolved combat system at the center of this new chapter.
A Story-Driven New Era For Virtua Fighter
Virtua Fighter Crossroads is finally expanding the series beyond traditional one-on-one fighting by blending story and combat into what SEGA describes as a fighting adventure (and yes, we’re completely stoked). The game will follow four protagonists whose personal histories and convictions collide across a new single-player experience, with Cielo introduced through a new story trailer as one of the central figures.
The story unfolds in Vilasapara, a fictional Southeast Asian metropolis known as a fighting town. The city includes multiple districts, from a walled central area to entertainment and resort zones, with side stories and quests designed to make the world feel more active and lived-in. SEGA’s official site also teases that player actions, victories, and defeats will shape the story, suggesting a more reactive narrative structure than fans may expect from the franchise.
Combat remains a key focus, with the showcase highlighting dramatic encounters woven into Story Mode, including multi-opponent brawls and boss battles. Players will also be able to jump into Battle Mode for one-on-one matches both online and offline, keeping the competitive backbone of Virtua Fighter intact while expanding the surrounding experience.
The project is also bringing in notable narrative talent. The writing team includes David Hayter as world-building supervisor, Brad Kane as lead writer, Tsuyoshi Furuta as scenario director, and Shinji Yamamoto as scenario writer, with credits spanning X-Men, Watchmen, Ghost of Tsushima, As Dusk Falls, Like a Dragon, Judgment, Persona 5 Royal, and more.
With Virtua Fighter Crossroads, SEGA appears to be aiming for more than a standard revival. Between its expanded story mode, cinematic presentation, new city, and still-central fighting systems, the reveal showcase solidifies the game as a major reinvention of one of the genre’s most influential names.
