A Clueless Sequel Series Centered on Cher is Coming to Peacock
The iconic ‘90s teen comedy Clueless is making a fabulous comeback! Variety first broke the news that Peacock is developing a sequel series with Alicia Silverstone reprising her star-making role as the fashion-forward, matchmaking Beverly Hills teen Cher Horowitz. The announcement, which Silverstone confirmed on Instagram with a cheeky “Totally buggin’… in the best way.” has sparked a wave of nostalgia and excitement among fans of the 1995 cult classic. Here’s everything we know about the new series, its creative team, and the buzz surrounding it.
A Star-Studded Creative Team
The Clueless sequel series is being crafted by a powerhouse trio: Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, alongside Dollface creator Jordan Weiss, who will write and executive produce. Joining them are Silverstone herself, original Clueless writer-director Amy Heckerling, and producer Robert Lawrence, all serving as executive producers. The project, produced by CBS Studios in association with Universal Television, promises to continue the story of the original film, which was a loose adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. Unlike a 2020 Peacock attempt that focused on Cher’s best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash) and fizzled out, this series is a direct follow-up centered on Cher.
Plot details remain under wraps, but the involvement of Heckerling, who shaped the original’s witty dialogue and vibrant aesthetic, suggests a faithful take. Schwartz and Savage, known for teen drama hits like The O.C. and Gossip Girl, bring expertise in crafting stylish, character-driven stories, while Weiss’s work on Dollface hints at a modern, female-focused sensibility.
Why It Matters
Clueless, released in 1995, became a cultural touchstone for its sharp humor, memorable slang (“As if!”), and iconic fashion, from Cher’s yellow plaid suit to her virtual closet. Starring Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Dash, and the late Brittany Murphy, it grossed $56 million at the box office and became a home video sensation. Its influence endures, inspiring everything from a 1996-1999 TV series (without Silverstone) to a 2018 off-Broadway musical. The new series taps into the ongoing ‘90s nostalgia wave, following reboots like Saved by the Bell and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on Peacock.
Silverstone’s return is a major draw. Her effervescent performance as Cher made her a ‘90s icon, and her recent reprisal of the role in a 2023 Rakuten Super Bowl ad proved she can still channel the character’s charm. However, no other original cast members, like Rudd (Josh) or Dash (Dionne), have been confirmed, leaving fans curious. Tragically, Murphy passed away in 2009, so we can only hope that the series will include some form of a tribute to the late icon.
While we wait for more news about where the story intends to take Cher next, Silverstone’s return paired with a seasoned creative team has us hopeful that the series can recapture the original’s magic. But more importantly, if we’re doing this, let’s hope it’s not a full-on Monet!
