Jamie Bell, Cosmo Jarvis, and More Join Paul Greengrass's The Uprising for Focus Features

Production is officially underway on Paul Greengrass’s new historical thriller The Uprising, and the ensemble just leveled up, because Focus Features announced that Jamie Bell, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, and Woody Norman have joined the cast.

They’ll star alongside Andrew Garfield, who leads the film as a legendary figure rallying a grassroots rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. As conflict spreads across England, his character shapes an army of the people to challenge the crown in a high-stakes fight for justice and survival.

The latest additions bring a mix of prestige and momentum. Bell (All of Us Strangers, Rocketman) continues a run of acclaimed work across film and television; Jarvis (FX’s global hit Shōgun, Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s Warfare) has become a go-to intense presence; McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit, Last Night in Soho) remains a critical favorite with recent festival turns; Miller (Elementary, Trainspotting) adds veteran edge; and Norman (C’mon C’mon, Cobweb) extends his breakout streak.

Behind the camera, The Uprising reunites Greengrass with producers known for muscular, audience-forward storytelling. Jason Blum produces through Blumhouse alongside Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, and Greengrass, with Lars Sylvest (Thank You Pictures) and Joe Neurauter (Supernix) also producing. Focus Features will distribute the film domestically.

For Focus, The Uprising also joins a slate stacked with auteur-driven titles: Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, based on the New York Times bestseller and starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley; Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons; and Song Sung Blue, toplined by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson.

With production rolling and a powerhouse roster in front of and behind the camera, The Uprising is shaping up as a large-scale, people-vs-power drama with Greengrass’s signature urgency—anchored by Garfield and a newly announced supporting cast built for impact.

Stay tuned for more on The Uprising.
