Steven Spielberg Takes a Bigger Role in the Future of Transformers

The next live-action Transformers movie is beginning to take shape, with the legendary Steven Spielberg moving into a more substantial creative role behind the franchise.

Spielberg will reportedly return as an executive producer on Paramount Pictures’ eighth live-action Transformers film, but his involvement will extend beyond the position he has held on previous installments. According to Variety, he will oversee all creative aspects of the movie alongside longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

The intention is reportedly to bring the new film closer in tone to the earlier Transformers movies, when Spielberg had greater creative involvement. He worked in a similar capacity on the first two installments, beginning with Michael Bay’s 2007 blockbuster and continuing with 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Jason Fuchs, whose recent credits include It: Welcome to Derry, is said to be penning the screenplay. The story will also take place in the present day, though Paramount is keeping additional plot details under wraps. Di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto, and Hasbro are attached as producers. Spielberg has remained connected to the film series as an executive producer throughout its run, and across seven live-action releases beginning in 2007, the Transformers franchise as a whole has earned more than $5.4 billion at the worldwide box office.

Michael Bay’s Possible Return Remains Uncertain

Who will direct the next installment is considerably less settled. TheWrap previously reported that Michael Bay was in early talks to return, which would put him behind a Transformers movie for the first time since 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight. Bay directed the franchise’s first five live-action films before stepping away from the director’s chair.

However, Variety’s latest report also indicated that no director has been announced and that Bay’s potential role in the project remains unknown. For now, his involvement should be considered unresolved rather than a confirmed reunion. There is more certainty surrounding one former franchise lead. The outlet also confirms that Shia LaBeouf, who starred as Sam Witwicky in the first three movies, will not return for the upcoming installment. Discussions surrounding the rest of the cast are still in their early stages.

Paramount’s plans for another Hasbro property have changed as well. The previously announced Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover is no longer moving forward, despite being teased at the end of 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Paramount has instead separated G.I. Joe from the franchise and is developing a new film directed by Danny McBride, with Bradley Cooper set to star as Duke.

That leaves Spielberg’s expanded involvement as one of the few firmly established pieces of the next Transformers movie so far. A director, additional cast, title, and release date have yet to be announced, but the creative goal is becoming clearer: Paramount is looking back toward the franchise’s earlier films as it determines where the Autobots and Decepticons go next.
