I Cannot Reach You: Vol. 9 Review
Mika’s I Cannot Reach You, Vol. 9 moves Yamato and Kakeru into a new stage of their relationship, and that shift gives the volume a gentle but meaningful sense of change. After finally becoming boyfriends, the two are no longer trapped in the same emotional stalemate that shaped so much of the earlier story. Instead, this volume asks what happens after feelings are finally returned, when romance has to exist alongside school, future plans, class changes, and the everyday uncertainty of growing up.
Plot
Vol. 9 begins during a spring break stretch, as Yamato and Kakeru’s second year of high school is nearly coming to a close. During a class celebration, Kakeru hears his classmates talk about their career paths and dreams, only to realize that he has never really asked Yamato what he wants for his own future. As the boys enter their third year, that question becomes part of the volume’s emotional spine.
The plot has a softer rhythm than a major confession arc, but that works for where the series is now. This is a transitional volume, built around the small disruptions that come after a relationship becomes real. Yamato and Kakeru are still deeply attached to each other, but the story starts placing them in situations where they cannot simply exist as an inseparable pair. New classes, new expectations, and new social (or the occasional social media) dynamics begin to test what their relationship looks like outside their most familiar routines. But the volume’s real highlight here might be the sweet, ocean date that the pair uses to recommit themselves to one another during this transitional period.
The arrival of Fujiwara also adds a more direct source of tension. As someone interested in Yamato, she brings out Kakeru’s insecurities in a way that feels fitting for this stage of the story. The conflict does not erase the softness of the romance, but it does give the volume a sharper emotional edge for the pair to work through.
Characters
Kakeru is especially strong in this volume because he is being pushed to define himself more clearly. His relationship with Yamato still matters enormously, but Vol. 9 gives him space to think about his own future, his own place in class, and the kind of person he wants to become. His jealousy, insecurities, and even anxiety are part of that important character growth (and seen consistently throughout the entire volume), but so is his willingness to keep trying.
Yamato remains the steadier half of the pair, though the volume does not flatten him into a perfect boyfriend. His future, popularity, and presence in a new class all become part of the pressure surrounding them. What makes Yamato and Kakeru appealing is that their bond still feels sincere even when outside complications start closing in.
Art
Mika’s art continues to suit the series beautifully. The softer expressions, light romantic beats, and school-life details give the volume an easy warmth. The art is especially effective in moments of embarrassment or affection, where a blush, glance, or small physical gesture says more than a dramatic speech would. The spring, nature-coated setting also gives the volume a fresh seasonal quality. Cherry blossoms, rising tides, class changes, and the start of a new school year all reinforce the idea that Yamato and Kakeru are entering a different emotional chapter.
Themes
The strongest theme in Vol. 9 is change. The story understands that becoming a couple does not end uncertainty. In some ways, it creates new kinds of vulnerability. Yamato and Kakeru now have to think about the future, about distance, about visibility, and about how their relationship fits into a larger social world. There is also a sweet emphasis on growing at different speeds without losing each other. Kakeru may feel less certain than Yamato at times, but the volume treats that insecurity with care.
Verdict
I Cannot Reach You, Vol. 9 is a charming and emotionally useful continuation of the series. It takes a different, less explosive approach than earlier confession-focused volumes, but it gains the opportunity to deepen Yamato and Kakeru’s romance by moving them into a more complicated stage of life.
