A24’s Mother Mary: What We Know So Far
Details are still pretty vague on A24’s upcoming film Mother Mary, but everything revealed so far points to a genre-bender with a pop-star framework and a darker, more intimate edge. So needless to say, we’re very much interested. Here’s what we know so far.
Plot details
A24’s synopsis frames the story around a comeback deadline: Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway), an iconic pop star, reconnects with her estranged friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), as she gears up for a major return. What starts as a practical need for a new tour look pulls them back into close collaboration, reopening old wounds and spiraling into a psychosexual affair.
Cast and creative team
Mother Mary is written and directed by David Lowery. Alongside Hathaway and Coel, the billed cast includes Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA twigs. Behind the camera, Andrew Droz Palermo and Rina Yang are credited as cinematographers, with Daniel Hart composing the score. Filming began in Germany in 2023, continued under a SAG-AFTRA waiver during the strike, and wrapped in 2024.
Music, Release date, and Trailer
Naturally, music is also a major part of the rollout. Hathaway performs the film’s original songs (from CHARLI XCX, FKA twigs, and Jack Antonoff) and a companion soundtrack album, Mother Mary: Greatest Hits, is set for April 17, 2026, via A24 Music. And as of now, two (of seven) songs have already been released from the project: “Burial” and “My Mouth Is Lonely for You.”
A24 has the film slated for a theatrical release on April 17, 2026, with a wide expansion on April 24, 2026. The film’s runtime is 1h 52m, and it is currently rated R for language and some violent content.
