REVIEW ✦

From marketing to execution, it’s safe to say that NEON’s recent release Longlegs has earned a reputation as one of the most inventive serial killer films over the past several decades — with riveting performances, strong pacing, and disconcerting terror. So now that the film has been unleashed into the world, here’s how Longlegs managed to establish itself as a gripping horror event worthy of the immense love it’s been receiving.

Longlegs | NEON

Maika Monroe Continues Her Winning Streak

From her breakout role in It Follows to her recent work in films like Watcher and Significant Other, next-gen scream queen Maika Monroe consistently delivers captivating performances, and Longlegs is no exception. As FBI agent Lee Harker, Monroe once again shines with her portrayal of an introverted, strong, and more importantly, determined character grappling with the obscene horrors unfolding before her.

Her presence on screen is entirely magnetic, using each of her nuanced, uncomfortable interactions to draw viewers into the heart of the investigation while keeping them on the edge of their seats. But at this point, she’s already assured genre fans (and even cinephiles in general) that she’s a total powerhouse, and Longlegs easily has what it takes to be considered some of her strongest work to date. Furthermore, as the film approaches its final act, Monroe conveys each life-shattering revelation with a palpable sense of dread — further cementing herself as a genre icon.

Unsettling Satanic Horrors

Longlegs quickly dives deep into the realm of satanic horror, crafting an atmosphere that is both unsettling and tense through its full runtime. The film's dark, ominous undertones with prominent religious textures serve to heighten the sense of foreboding as the occult clues lead Harker down a twisted path in pursuit of a malevolent serial killer connected to something much larger.

The seamless blend of supernatural elements with real-world terror creates a chilling experience, leaving audiences with a few opportunities to draw their own conclusions about certain aspects of these rattling occurrences — while also offering just enough answers to uncover some degree of clarity for those who require structural clarity. Because when you’re looking for a solid stannic-centric film, you need to know when to pull back and when to go full throttle. This, thankfully, is (typically) the case with Longlegs outside of a few abstract evil-vessel reveals.

Compelling, Impactful Twists

One of the exemplary aspects of Longlegs is its ability to keep viewers guessing with its compelling and impactful twists — making each interaction something worth unpacking for future viewings. As Harker dives further into the bloody occult mystery surrounding the killer's motives and capacity for brutality, the film unravels layer by layer, revealing shocking revelations that hold the potential to leave a lasting impression.

The intricate storytelling combined with superb performances from the cast, including talent like Nicolas Cage and Alicia Witt facilitates several unforgettable genre moments that keeps audiences engrossed up until the grisly conclusion where every essential player is involved. Now that’s the kind of final act you would want to see within a modern horror masterpiece.

A Well-Paced Mystery

In addition to its satanic backdrop, twists, and commendable performances, Longlegs masterfully navigates the balance between suspense and revelation, delivering a well-paced mystery that keeps viewers undoubtedly invested in the high-stakes final act.

The film expertly builds tension with each new clue discovered by Harker, leading to a crescendo of suspense that culminates in a satisfying and chilling conclusion for a full-circle experience. Also, by the tumultuous ending of Longlegs, the intricate plot threads are each meticulously woven together in the most heart-wrenching ways possible, offering a rich presentation of horror and mystery that’s as engaging as it is terrifying.

Score: 8/10

NEON’s Longlegs is a well-acted, chilling story that’s earned its reputation as one of the strongest serial killer films of our time.
