REVIEW ✦

After years of ambiguity and suspense, Deadpool & Wolverine has officially brought back a few iconic 20th Century Fox characters into the spotlight of the MCU. And while this event has been a long time coming, its monumental transition comes with a lot of pressure given Marvel Studios’ larger-than-life ambitions through the vastness of the multiverse. So how does Deadpool & Wolverine compare to its predecessors and the current era of the MCU?

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) | Marvel Studios

The Dynamic Between Deadpool and Wolverine Feels Solid

Tonally, Deadpool & Wolverine is an impressive addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that seamlessly integrates the classic Deadpool franchise humor — serving as a positive change of pace for the current atmospheric tendencies associated with Marvel’s unpredictable multiversal era. The dynamic between the film’s lead characters Deadpool and Wolverine provides a memorable balance of sarcasm and tenacity (becoming a unique duo that delivers), keeping viewers engaged through their relationship, or even through their distinct idiosyncrasies. Additionally, the characters' banter is sharp and quick-witted, reminiscent of the beloved Deadpool humor from the comics and former cinematic chapters, forging an authentic and entertaining on-screen chemistry for the relentless pairing.

What generally sets Deadpool & Wolverine apart from the tone of other recent superhero genre flicks is its ability to inject the most irreverent humor possible into the superhero mold, offering a refreshing take on the traditional MCU formula. The film's quirky dialogue and self-aware jokes bring a new level of comedy to the Marvel universe (and fortunately, not limited to the Fox universe), making it stand out among a sea of ambitious big-budget offerings. And between Deadpool's trademark breaking of the fourth wall combined with Wolverine's gruff demeanor, the film creates a unique blend of humor and action that solidifies its place as one of Phase Five’s strongest projects.

Adding More Context to the MCU’s Multiverse Era

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the story of Deadpool & Wolverine has managed to expand our understanding of the multiverse in intriguing new ways. Particularly, the concept of 'anchor beings' who play a crucial role in maintaining the fabric of their respective worlds. As Deadpool's campy, fearless nature becomes an uncommon vehicle for this unique multiverse story on the outskirts of the MCU, viewers are then informatively led to the reveal that Wolverine actually serves as a grounding force in Deadpool’s reality (thus revealing details that are bound to impact future Multiverse tales). This idea of anchor beings not only provides depth to the narrative but also offers transitional insight into the delicate balance required to uphold a functioning world.

Moreover, the inclusion of Deadpool & Wolverine in the MCU has cleverly shed light on former heroes who didn’t receive the opportunity to make this transition into Marvel — forcing the film to cater more to lore-heavy fans over causal moviegoers; with direct ties to the entire MCU timeline, Elektra, Fantastic Four, Blade, and more. Through subtle references and easter eggs, audiences have been given glimpses of these alternate (or in some instances, matured) versions of beloved characters, enriching the overall tapestry of the studio’s merging, massive multiverse. This not only honors the legacy of these heroes but also opens up possibilities for future storylines and crossovers. And honestly, a film that brings in Elektra, X-23, and Colossus is enough to pique our interest. Especially when there’s a much-needed happy ending for several of these beloved characters.

Fun, Explosive Action

In Deadpool & Wolverine, the dynamic duo captivates audiences with heart-pounding action sequences and jaw-dropping big-budget special effects. One particular standout scene is the meticulously choreographed car fight between the titular characters, highlighting their martial arts prowess and superhuman capabilities in an exhilarating and high-octane moment. The flawless integration of practical stunts and CGI not only amplifies the authenticity of the battle but also ensures that viewers are kept on the edge of the seats of their Honda Odyssey.

Outside of the brutal fight between the titular characters, the movie generally doesn't shy away from presenting bloody, yet humorously depicted conclusions for several of the TVA agents, injecting a dose of black comedy into the intense action scenes. The special effects team demonstrates extreme expertise in crafting visually striking and commendable gore effects, blurring the franchise’s beloved boundary between startling violence and twisted humor. As a result, the juxtaposition of explosive action and intelligent wit seen throughout the film underlines the filmmaking team's skill in fashioning an engaging and immersive cinematic experience — perfectly tailored for fans of both Deadpool and Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine Succeeds at Breaking Boundaries

Deadpool & Wolverine stand as prime examples of how the expansive MCU and other comic book cinematic studios can push boundaries and continue to evolve (regardless of anyone claiming genre fatigue). To elaborate, the inclusion of these two iconic characters, previously under 20th Century Fox's control, showcases the flexibility and adaptability of superhero narratives in the film industry, even if they sometimes have to minimize their significance within the overall Marvel narrative. For now... Still, Deadpool, known for his chaotic humor and breaking the fourth wall, contributes a fresh and unconventional approach to the typical superhero archetype — becoming the only sensible character to make that necessary crossover moment. Furthermore, his R-rated movies demonstrated that superhero stories can navigate adult themes while still being commercially successful, challenging the notion that the most popular comic book adaptations must cater to a younger audience.

Similarly, Wolverine's partial integration into the MCU following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox opened up new possibilities for storytelling and character development. Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine for nearly two decades built a strong fan base and established the character as a linchpin of the X-Men franchise, so by incorporating a new Wolverine into the MCU, Marvel Studios signaled a willingness to embrace established legacies while propelling them into new narratives. The seamless progression of these beloved characters from one cinematic universe to another not only delighted fans but also demonstrated the fluidity of storytelling across different comic book properties.

Score: 8/10

As a title specifically curated for longtime comic book fans, Deadpool & Wolverine packs a punch in both humor and action — proving that both characters have earned their titles as Marvel legends.
