The New Backrooms Trailer Turns an Internet Horror Obsession Into A24’s Next Big Nightmare

The new Backrooms trailer is finally here, and it does exactly what it needs to do. Rather than overexplaining the mythology, the footage leans into scale, unease, and the specific kind of liminal dread that made the online horror phenomenon stick in people’s heads in the first place.

The film is directed by Kane Parsons, the filmmaker behind the viral Backrooms series that helped turn the concept into a modern horror obsession—and A24 is clearly trusting Parsons’s awareness of the Backrooms atmosphere here. Though what the trailer gives away is still fairly minimal, which works in its favor.

The film’s official synopsis reveals only that “a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.” From there, the footage opens into something much larger and more unnerving, teasing distorted space, endless rooms, and the feeling that the environment itself is working against anyone trapped inside it. That restraint helps preserve the mystery while still making the feature version feel cinematic in a way that goes beyond the original shorts.

It also helps that the film is not leaning on the concept alone. Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, with Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia rounding out the cast. So, based on the trailer’s tone and ensemble, the film seems to understand that the real pull of Backrooms has always been the atmosphere and unease it creates.

Backrooms opens in theaters on May 29, 2026.
