Ninja Scroll 4K Sets Limited Theatrical Release for October

Ninja Scroll is returning to the big screen this fall with a new 4K restoration. HIDIVE and Iconic Events Releasing announced that the acclaimed samurai anime film will receive a limited theatrical release across the U.S. and Canada on October 4, 5, and 7.

The release marks the second collaboration between HIDIVE and Iconic Events Releasing for Ninja Scroll, following the film’s successful 30th anniversary theatrical re-release in 2024. A new 4K theatrical trailer was also revealed alongside the announcement, giving fans an early look at the restored version before tickets go on sale. Here’s everything you need to know about the story, the re-release, and why this is a major anime event.

The Anime Classic Returns in a New 4K Restoration

Written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Ninja Scroll was originally released in 1993 and has since become one of the most influential anime films of its era. The film follows Jubei, a wandering swordsman who saves a young ninja woman and is pulled into a much larger mystery involving the deaths of an entire village. As the two investigate, they uncover a conspiracy tied to demonic forces that will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried.

The new 4K restoration was produced by AMC Global Media’s Sentai under Kawajiri’s supervision. According to the announcement, the restoration involved scanning the original 35mm negative in 4K, repairing damage, and completing color correction to create an archival-quality digital master. The restored version made its world premiere earlier this year at the 76th annual Berlinale International Film Festival.

The film runs 94 minutes and features animation cooperation from Madhouse, with Yutaka Minowa serving as character designer and animation director. The creative team also includes art director Hiromasa Ogura, director of photography Hitoshi Yamaguchi, sound director Yasunori Honda, and composer Kaoru Wada.

A ticket on-sale date for the Ninja Scroll 4K limited theatrical release will be announced soon, along with the launch of the official website. Advance tickets will be available through the official site and participating theater box offices.

Ninja Scroll 4K will screen in theaters across the U.S. and Canada on October 4, 5, and 7.
