Before the Plot Even Kicks In, DC’s New Titans Roster Has Us Hooked
DC’s New Titans already has something many fresh team-driven storylines take a while to build: momentum. Even before the book has fully revealed its long-term shape, the setup around issue #33 has made this lineup feel like more than a routine transition.
Following the end of the previous Titans run, the series shifts into New Titans with writer Tate Brombal and artist Sami Basri, and DC is positioning it as a fresh entry point centered on the next generation of heroes. That idea is appealing on its own, but Brombal’s description of the opening arc as a reckoning between “the old and the new, the past and the future” gives the relaunch an added sense of direction. And because the team’s full shape is still unfolding, some of the excitement comes from the possibility that this lineup could grow into something more substantial than a brief passing configuration.
The roster puts dark horse characters back where they belong
What really makes the book exciting this early, though, is the team itself. Based on what has been revealed so far, New Titans brings together Terra, Stephanie Brown, Yara Flor, Red Devil, and Jon Kent in a lineup that already feels full of potential. It draws from very different corners of DC history, but the mix still feels natural for a Titans book, which gives the roster an immediate sense of energy.
Terra is arguably the biggest draw. She remains one of DC’s best characters, and there is something especially satisfying about seeing the publisher continue to make room for the kind of redemption and complexity she deserves. Red Devil is another smart addition, often bringing the kind of fun, underappreciated energy that fits especially well in a Titans title.
Jon Kent has the capacity to add a different kind of pull to the mix. He typically brings recognizability and a strong legacy connection that suits the larger idea behind New Titans, while Stephanie Brown and Yara Flor round out the team with even more personality, range, and distinct strengths. Even before the full dynamic has taken shape on the page, this already feels like a roster with room to grow in interesting ways, and that is more than enough to make the relaunch worth watching.
For readers who want an early look at where that setup is headed, DC’s New Titans #33 by Tate Brombal, Sami Basri, and Adriano Lucas is out now.
