A24’s Backrooms Teaser Offers a Creepy First Look at the Viral Horror Adaptation
A24 has officially released the first teaser for Backrooms, and it’s an unnerving first look that understands exactly what made the property resonate in the first place. Instead of over-explaining the mythology, the preview leans into dread, scale, and disorientation, selling the film through atmosphere and unease.
That creative choice also tracks with the project’s roots. Backrooms is based on Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube series, which expanded on the broader internet urban legend tied to the 2019 creepypasta phenomenon. The feature adaptation was first announced in 2023, with Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps attached, though much of the anticipation has centered on whether a studio version could preserve the same uncanny tone that made Parsons’ work so effective online.
The new teaser suggests it can. Released on February 24, the clip features a chilling voiceover describing a place that feels “massive” and seemingly endless, with rooms stretching on and on. It’s brief, but it immediately establishes the film’s identity. Rather than functioning as a plot-heavy preview, it plays like a sensory warning, emphasizing space, dread, and the feeling of being trapped inside something you can’t understand.
As for what we know so far, A24 has set Backrooms for a May 29, 2026, theatrical release. The studio lists Parsons as director with Roberto Patino and Will Soodik as writers, alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve leading the cast. The ensemble extends beyond the two leads, with TheWrap also reporting that Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia have roles in the film.
For now, the teaser confirms the most important thing. This adaptation appears to understand that the real horror of Backrooms comes from the environment itself—and because of that, we’re instantly intrigued about what comes next.
