K-pop Group Baby DON'T Cry Opens Up ABout their Sound, Identity, and Latest Single "I DON'T CARE"
Baby DONT Cry arrived in a crowded rookie year and still managed to feel like an industry event. Though it’s largely unsurprising considering that the group’s four members Yihyun, Kumi, Mia, and Beni trained for years before stepping out as the first K-pop girl group under P NATION, the label led by global superstar PSY and known for artists who lean into personality and performance.
Built on new wave pulse and sharp hooks, the group’s high-energy debut single “F Girl” wasted no time pushing back at the way grades, numbers, and labels get used to rank people. The song also takes their message a step further and urges listeners to let go of those ceilings and boldly move in their own direction instead. That message carefully lines up with the group’s broader identity as a team that aims to challenge stereotypes and wants to show something closer to their actual lives, including the awkward parts that usually get edited out in the standard idol narratives.
Next up from the group is “I DONT CARE,” a powerful new single that channels the feeling of girls running toward their dreams, building in intensity as it goes. And ahead of the new era, we caught up with Yihyun, Kumi, Mia, and Beni to talk about their early days at P NATION, the story behind their songs, and the future they are chasing with Cheriz (their devoted fans) at their side.
Now that you’ve had time to reflect on the release of your magnetic debut, “F Girl,” how do you see that song contributing to the group’s current identity?
Mia: I think we were able to deliver the message of living freely and doing what you want without worrying too much about what others think. This song is filled with our free-spirited energy, and we hope to show an even brighter and more carefree side of Baby DONT Cry this time.
As the first girl group from P NATION, how did that shape your mindset as trainees, and what were some of the first conversations you had with PSY and the team about what this group should stand for?
Beni: Being P NATION’s first girl group has felt like both a responsibility and an honor. So, every time we practiced, we focused on the mindset of “let’s become the new standard”. Our CEO, PSY, always told us to make music that is true to who we are, and I think those words really shaped Baby DONT Cry
Considering that you trained together for years before your debut, what is a memory from those trainee days that you feel shaped your bond the most, whether it was a hard moment or a small everyday routine?
Yihyun: I think it was the moment we were told the four of us would debut as a group. That night, when we went back to the dorm, we promised we’d stay by each other’s side through both the tough moments and the happy ones.
“F Girl” and your concept touch on pressure around image and expectations. How do each of you personally relate to that message, and what kind of stereotypes are you most interested in breaking?
Mia: Rather than being weighed down by pressure, I think turning those expectations into motivation creates a positive cycle. We try to stay positive and focus on showing an even better performance, which is why we practice hard every day.
Your latest track, “I DONT CARE,” is being described as a song about running toward your dreams with growing intensity. In your own words, what story does the song tell?
Kumi: It’s a song that gives you the strength to say “I am who I am”, no matter what obstacles stand in your way. Every time I hear it, it feels like I gain courage.
What’s a new side of Baby DONT Cry that fans should be ready to see from this comeback?
Beni: In this comeback, you’ll be able to feel a more mature energy from Baby DONT Cry. Through our expressions, movements, and the message in the music, we want to show everyone that this is truly the beginning of Baby DONT Cry.
Looking ahead, what kind of stories or sounds do you hope to explore on future projects?
Yihyun: We want to be a group that explores different concepts and genres instead of being limited to just one. We’re working hard to show a wider variety of styles, so please look forward to everything Baby DONT Cry will bring in the future!
