The popular Manhwa title Itaewon Class (from Yen Press) has returned with the second volume of the revenge-riddled title, which takes readers deeper into Itaewon and the protagonist’s expansive conflicts regarding his past and future. So now that we’ve had the chance to uncover more about Saeroyi’s life, here are our thoughts on the events of the volume.

Itaewon Class Vol. 2 | Yen Press

The Plot

The second volume of Itaewon Class continues to focus on the complex world of Saeroyi Park as his pursuit for redemption and revenge unfolds in the vibrant backdrop of the manhwa’s fictionalized version of Itaewon. At this point of the story, Saeroyi has technically achieved his long-awaited dream of owning a pub, only to face the harsh reality of struggling to attract customers.

The unexpected entry of Yiseo Jo, a social media sensation with a flair for stirring up trouble, introduces a new dynamic that tests Saeroyi's resolve and principles given his vast responsibilities and goals. As the narrative unravels, the stakes are raised with new trouble-ridden circumstances, presenting a compelling blend of chaotic twists that keep readers on the edge of their seats.

The Characters

Itaewon Class further showcases the evolution of its characters, particularly highlighting Saeroyi Park and newcomer Yiseo Jo. Saeroyi's unwavering determination and moral compass are further explored, portraying his struggles with maintaining his ideals in the face of adversity — with grand ambitions and a handful of intriguing character dynamics worthy of unpacking. But he’s basically a magnet for trouble.

Yiseo Jo emerges as the volume’s most noteworthy character (and not in an entirely positive way), adding a younger sense of rebelion and depth with her enigmatic nature. And there’s that interesting exchange between Saeroyi and SooAh, which is bound to cause more trouble in the chapters that follow.

Art and Visuals

The art in Itaewon Class maintains its first volume’s unique standard, capturing the essence of the bustling neighborhood of Itaewon with detailed settings and various soft, yet stoic character designs. As the volume progresses and offers readers several fresh backdrops (and opportunities to expand on areas that are staples) the title challenges itself and the range of its first volume — reiterating that Kwang Jin’s celebrated Manhwa is very much deserving of its cult audience. Especially given the careful expressive depiction of character’s shrouded in mystery like SooAh.

Themes and Symbolism

From a thematic standpoint, Itaewon Class continues to explore universal themes of justice, redemption, and the consequences of one's choices. However, this volume begins to explore that notion through others in addition to Saeroyi. The narrative delves into the complexities of morality and the pursuit of actual vengeance itself, examining how personal convictions can (negatively) shape destinies.

Furthermore, with recurring motifs such as food, identity, and social status adding layers of meaning to the characters' actions and motivations, the thematic depth in this volume invites readers to reflect on the transformative power of resilience.

Verdict

Overall, Itaewon Class Vol. 2 delivers a solid continuation of Saeroyi Park's journey, blending rapidly evolving storytelling with rich character development to create a worthwhile reading experience.
