The Emmy Awards Are Moving to Prime Video Beginning in 2027
The Emmy Awards are leaving their longtime broadcast rotation for a new home on Prime Video. Beginning with the 2027 ceremony, Prime Video will become the exclusive global home of the Emmys under a six-year agreement with the Television Academy. The deal succeeds the organization’s longtime “Wheel Deal,” which moved the annual telecast between ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC and concluded with the 2026 ceremony.
The transition comes with an important distinction for viewers who do not subscribe to Amazon Prime. The Emmys will stream live without a subscription or paywall, with the Television Academy saying Prime Video will make the ceremony available to audiences in more than 240 countries and territories. The show will continue airing live in September, maintaining its familiar place on the television calendar while substantially changing how audiences access it.
The agreement is set to run for six years, beginning in 2027 and continuing through 2032.
The Emmys Are Expanding Beyond a Single Night
The Television Academy has framed the new agreement as an opportunity to broaden the Emmys beyond the annual ceremony itself. Academy chair Cris Abrego pointed to television’s increasingly international audience while emphasizing the importance of making the event easier to reach across markets.
Prime Video’s involvement will also extend beyond distributing the September ceremony. The Academy says the companies intend to develop additional experiences throughout the year that give audiences new ways to discover and engage with Emmy-recognized television. Exactly what those additions will include has yet to be announced.
The shift arrives at a point when television has become increasingly difficult to separate into traditional categories. Broadcast programs, cable series, and streaming originals regularly compete alongside one another at the Emmys, making the move to a global streaming platform feel especially aligned with the current shape of the medium.
There are still unanswered questions about what Prime Video may do with the presentation itself or how those year-round plans will develop—but after decades of rotating between the major broadcast networks, the Emmys are entering a new era with one long-term streaming home.
