Jisoo Shakes Things Up with "earthquake"

South Korean singer Jisoo, a member of the globally renowned K-pop group BLACKPINK, has made a seismic impact with her debut solo EP, AMORTAGE. And upon release, the EP's lead single "earthquake" has already enthralled us with its electrifying pop sound and visually stunning music video.

Directed by Christian Breslauer, known for his work with Ariana Grande, the "earthquake" music video is a cinematic spectacle. The storyline follows Jisoo as an office worker whose monotonous routine is disrupted by an unexpected text from her lover. This leads her into a surreal journey filled with a lie detector test, a dramatic car crash, and a mesmerizing dance sequence atop a giant phone screen. And as expected given her star power, the video features a surprise cameo from actor Cha Seung Won, adding to its allure.

"earthquake" sonically builds on the magnetic allure of Jisoo's 2023 hit "Flower," but with a fuller, more dynamic production that showcases a more serious demeanor. Her sultry vocals glide over a groovy pop beat, blending sensuality with ferocity. The track’s addictive chorus and sleek choreography further establish "earthquake" as a standout in her solo career.

Jisoo's AMORTAGE EP also showcases her artistic growth, blending pop, electronic, and R&B to explore love's many facets. Unlike her debut solo project, which leaned heavily into Korean pop influences, AMORTAGE features English tracks and Jisoo's own songwriting. The result is a collection of polished, irresistibly catchy tracks that prove her versatility beyond BLACKPINK’s signature sound.

The EP includes other tracks such as "Your Love," "Tears," and "Hugs & Kisses," each exploring different aspects of love and relationships. On one hand, "Your Love" conveys the deep happiness found in a loving relationship with guitar riffs and vibey bass lines. Conversely, "Tears" is a retrofitted take on heartbreak, featuring Jisoo’s recognizable vocals.

Up to this point, Jisoo has played a crucial role in shaping BLACKPINK’s global success with her rich vocal tone and effortless stage presence making her a fan favorite. However, her solo journey finally allows her to explore a more personal and diverse musical style. And compared to her BLACKPINK performances, Jisoo’s solo work in AMORTAGE feels more intimate and narrative-driven.
