Ariana Grande Turns Heartbreak Into Horror in New Music Video for “hate that i made you love me”
Ariana Grande has entered a darker new chapter of her music career with the release of the official music video for her comeback single “hate that i made you love me.” The artist’s latest visual, which just arrived on June 1, stars actor Justin Long and brings a horror-inspired edge to Grande’s latest single, turning emotional fallout into something more cinematic and unsettling.
Directed by Christian Breslauer, the video begins with Long’s character burying Grande before quickly unraveling into a surreal nightmare. As he tries to move on and erase reminders of their relationship, Grande reappears as a ghostly presence, haunting him through a series of increasingly intense moments. The story includes a car crash, a fire, a diner filled with multiple versions of Grande, and a final reversal that leaves Long’s character buried alive.
The video gives the song a dramatic visual identity, blending Grande’s polished pop world with revenge-thriller imagery. Rather than playing the breakup as straightforward heartbreak, the clip leans into obsession, guilt, and the lingering presence of a relationship that refuses to disappear. It also gives Long a central role, with the actor carrying much of the video’s physical panic while Grande appears as the calm, eerie force driving the chaos.
“hate that i made you love me” is officially labeled as the lead single from Grande’s upcoming album Petal, which is set for release on July 31. The project follows her popular album Eternal Sunshine, released in 2024, and arrives as Grande continues balancing music with her film work. With its haunted romance concept and sharp visual direction, the new video for “hate that i made you love me” certainly sets the tone for an era that looks ready to explore vulnerability, control, and reinvention through a different lens.
