Breaking Down The Fantastic Four: First Steps Footage From SDCC
After getting a glimpse of the highly anticipated film The Fantastic Four: First Steps via detail-oriented concept content at SDCC, it’s safe to say that fans are extremely excited about what’s to come.
Despite the notion that filming has yet to commence, Marvel still made sure to come prepared to the massive pop culture event — with Kevin Feige and director Matt Shakman showcasing aesthetically appealing test footage that masterfully encapsulates the movie's “retro-futuristic” theme outside of the MCU’s Earth 616. Set to a captivating space-age score by renowned composer Michael Giacchino, the condensed content utilizes the core four of “Marvel’s First Family” by offering brief cuts of plain-dressed versions of Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.
Within the footage, Pascal's Reed Richards is also shown in a science-like classroom setting struggling to impress his younger audience with his knowledge of the multiverse before showcasing his dazzling sci-fi creations. Pascal's impactful father-figure presence (and yes, he maintains the mustache), effortlessly sets the tone with a general ‘60s personality before transitioning into several brief stylistic sequences.
The test footage reel that follows includes a breathtaking opportunity to forge futuristic visuals unlike anything we’ve seen in the MCU, before cutting to a shot of Reed Richards dressed in metallic blue astronaut attire alongside Ben Grimm, who’s introduced by Reed as the most skilled pilot in the world. Then, to make the era feel even more immersive, the footage unveils a lively ‘60s gameshow titled Let’s Make a Match, (a huge nod to programs of that time), carefully teasing a silhouette of Grimm in his massive form.
By the time the teaser arrives at its end, the concluding moments reveal an office setting in a massive skyscraper, where viewers are then forced to come face-to-face with a closeup of the planet-eater known as Galactus, whose eye is peering into the building. And while the CGI portrayal of Galactus included in this test footage isn’t exactly what we’ll be getting from the final film, longtime fans will appreciate the fact that the character's resemblance to his comic book counterpart remains strikingly accurate when compared to The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
So, between its retro flair, futuristic visuals, and an overwhelming sense of optimism that’s established in the concept trailer, it’s hard to envision The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be anything other than impressive.
Now we just have to wait and see how it all comes together when the third iteration of The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters in 2025.
