(G)I-DLE Member YUQI Discusses Her New Solo Endeavor

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW ✦

It's safe to assume that if you know anything about K-pop, you've heard of the powerhouse group (G)I-DLE, and its respected roster of talent. They've generated a vast catalog of hits, sold millions of albums, toured the world, and garnered several awards throughout their impactful career so far. However, considering their talents and star power, it feels like we’ve only scratched the surface of what the uber-pop group will achieve together.

With that being said, as witnessed throughout nearly every artist's journey in a group setting, there comes a point where one develops a practical desire to explore notions of individuality and self-expression, leading to something much more personal. Which, understandably, is the exact creative sentiment that (G)I-DLE's resident raspy powerhouse YUQI is experiencing during this particular chapter of her career.

Through a newly crafted fusion of diverse influences (her first official mini-album titled YUQ1), the renowned vocalist places her adeptly husky range at the forefront of her music — masterfully highlighted in the satisfying appetizer to the mini-album, titled “Could It Be.” As a result of its uniqueness and artist-tailored approach, the feel-good pop track further establishes YUQI’s multilingual skillset in the music world, delivering an English track reminiscent of an indie-pop hit with an original twist that demands listeners' attention. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, with the mini-album incorporating songs that range in genre, from attitude-heavy pop inventions (like the title track “Freaky” which is conceptual perfection) to a softer, comfortable alternative sound.

Now, the respected performer and Fendi ambassador is offering us insight into her new solo endeavors to celebrate the release of YUQ1.

It’s been a few years since you’ve graced the music scene as a soloist, so we’re definitely excited about this comeback! Was there a moment in particular that ignited this return, or was it a long time coming?

YUQI: I thought that right now was the appropriate time to record my solo album because this has always been my dream. I decided to release my solo album after talking to the company about it and receiving a great response from them!

After your previous solo comeback, you’ve dropped a few massively viral tracks with (G)I-DLE, charismatic collaborations, song covers, and you’ve become an ambassador of Fendi! Through it all, what has probably been the biggest career/personal change you’ve experienced from A Page to now?

YUQI: When I released the [A Page] album, I was filled with passion and eager to show the world my album as soon as possible. However, over the past few years, I’ve noticed myself focusing more on the music itself and seeing a significant growth in my own mindset.

In regards to your new music, is there a song, detail, or concept on the album that brought out a new side of your artistry?

YUQI: This album allowed me to try a lot of new experiences for the first time. Working on it independently, I was able to explore every music style and concept that I’ve always wanted to pursue.

YUQI: CUBE Entertainment

You’re no stranger to iconic music videos, so fans always know they’re going to witness something spectacular. With that being said, what’s one moment in your new music video that you immediately knew (or hoped) that fans were going to love?

YUQI: I think this music video shows the real YUQI itself. I was hoping for a bright and cheerful atmosphere rather than anything serious and cool. To start with, I laughed a lot and had a great time filming this entire music video.

Since you’ve been able to explore so many genres and styles so far – what’s one style of music that you’re still hoping to tackle? And what are a few of your favorite tracks within that genre/style?

YUQI: Actually, I guess I have tried most of the genres now, but if I had to try I would pick R&B again. I would also suggest my cover track “普通朋友”

You’ve been pursuing your dreams as a performer for nearly 10 years now, and there've been a lot of big wins, opportunities to evolve, and so much more. When you think about the next 10 years of your career – what are some of the dreams or goals you’d like to work toward?

YUQI: In 10 years, my dream would be to go on my own solo world tour. The idea of traveling around the world and performing solo sounds exciting!
