Singer-Songwriter JORDY Talks Hyperpop, TikTok, and More

Rising from the vibrant music scene of Los Angeles, JORDY has spent the past several years earning attention for his heartfelt lyrics and dynamic pop sound — often described as a diary set to melody that explores the intricacies of life, love, and self-discovery from the perspective of a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

More recently, JORDY has unveiled the deluxe version of his third album SEX WITH MYSELF AND IT LASTS LONGER, adding five new tracks that promise to deliver the same raw, unfiltered emotion that has become synonymous with his signature style. And ultimately, this revamped album is infused with night-club-ready dance beats and hyperpop influences, offering listeners an eccentric soundtrack to their own bold, fearless stories.

Now, JORDY is breaking it all down for us.

Congratulations on the upcoming release of the deluxe version of SEX WITH MYSELF AND IT LASTS LONGER! Can you tell us more about the origin of this album and how these five new tracks fit alongside the others?

JORDY: This album was certainly the beginning of a new chapter for me. After becoming an independent artist, it gave me an opportunity to really hone in on concepts I hadn’t explored yet. I had the freedom to really do what I wanted. As a queer person, it takes a long time for a lot of us to really feel comfortable with ourselves sexually, without any shame attached. For me, writing these songs was freeing myself from those feelings. It’s an album of sexual liberation, and I’m so proud of it.

Your songwriting is known for being dynamic and diaristic. How do your personal experiences influence the music and lyrics of this album?

JORDY: Everything I write is inspired and based on my own experiences. Maybe some songs lean more fantasy, but it’s still everything going on in my brain. This crazy brain…[laughs].

Your single "BREAK MY!" has already earned a lot of attention from listeners. What was the creative process like for this track, and how would you characterize its core sound?

JORDY: Going into the studio that day, I was listening to “Club Classics” off of BRAT. I just loved the tempo and the overall energy of that song. "BREAK MY!" is certainly a pop-heavy song, but with those hyperpop influences. I also had actually injured my back and found a way to make it into a sexy song!

Your music has also been described as having hyperpop influences. How do you incorporate these elements into your own sound, and what artists have inspired this direction?

JORDY: I think it’s just about taking experimental risks production-wise. Charli XCX is a huge influence, as well as SOPHIE—rest in peace—and Kim Petras. The process of making these songs was a lot of fun.

As an artist who has been recognized by GLAAD, iHeartRadio, and Queerty, how important is it for you to use your platform to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community?

JORDY: It’s incredibly important. We deserve music in the mainstream, we deserve to feel heard and understood in music, and we deserve safe spaces. I want my music and shows to always provide that. And I always want to use my platform for the greater good.

Your track "Story of a Boy" went viral on TikTok and ignited a trend that celebrated Trans creators. What was it like to see such a positive response and how do you feel social media has impacted your music career?

JORDY: It was so beautiful. Truly a moment and chapter I will never forget. I feel very lucky that so many people resonated with that song, especially the Trans creators who started the trend. To answer the second part of your question, social media plays a huge role, but it’s also important to remember that it’s not everything. There is way more to artistry than virality. But it has certainly been helpful.

From your 2018 breakout single "Just Friends" to your latest album, how do you think your music and style have evolved over the years?

JORDY: My music has grown as I have grown. I’ve matured and become wildly more independent as an individual, and my music reflects that. I think it’s special that my listeners who have been there since the beginning have been able to evolve with me. We’re all growing up together and I find that so special.
