CLAIR on ‘Redline Impact’ and Her Upcoming Album

In the unpredictable landscape of electronic music, it’s pretty apparent that artists are required to carve out a distinctive sound to keep listeners invested. And as a rising artist known for her unique blend of classical music elements with modern electronic production, CLAIR is quickly working toward that very goal — culminating in her recent collaboration with Eastern Margins for the groundbreaking compilation album, Redline Impact.

Conceptually, this ambitious project was designed to spotlight talent from various parts of East and South-East Asia, with its output resulting in a hypnotizing celebration of diverse musical styles and cultural influences. Now, on the heels of her work with Eastern Margins, here’s what CLAIR had to say about her experience with Redline Impact and the upcoming era of her high-energy music.

CLAIR

How did you initially get involved in Eastern Margins’ compilation album Redline Impact? What drew you to this project?

CLAIR: Eastern Margins approached me as they were interested in working on something together, it was a long time coming. Redline Impact is as tough as it sounds, I’m super honored to be involved in this project

Redline Impact features artists from various parts of East and South-East Asia, celebrating an array of unique styles. Sonically, what do you believe your contribution brings to the table?

CLAIR: Euphoria and emotion — and to be the sonic crush for your ears!

How does your background in classical music influence your approach to creating electronic music; and did it help you with this particular collaboration?

CLAIR: I love writing melodies, that’s the most exciting part for me when it comes to production. I like to incorporate classical piano elements into hard dance music. It’s like raindrops on your face after running through a sandstorm.

The song V and I made for Redline Impact is the perfect mixture of both our worlds, V introduced me to the genre ‘Makina’, so I thought it would only make sense if our first collaboration was something of this essence. In the midst of a very rhythmic hard dance track, there lays a simple piano breakdown for a ‘tears on the dance floor’ effect.

CLAIR

As someone with a classical background, what challenges did you face while merging classical instruments with modern electronic production styles for your upcoming album?

CLAIR: Any challenge is a new experience — the possibilities are endless, and I’m always down to experiment with new ways of production. Mixing hardware with a piano is initially how I started producing, so I really like playing with synthesizers when I’m in the studio.

When it comes to your upcoming album, what should fans expect to experience? Are there any themes or styles you’re particularly excited to explore?

CLAIR: This [next] album is an ode to brain-altering experiences. It's my first full-body project, also the first time incorporating my vocals and exploring my love for pop and trance music.

In closing, as a rising star in the electronic music scene, what advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to break into this genre?

CLAIR: Dream BIG!
