Everything We Know About the Highly Anticipated Anime Series ‘Lazarus’

Next year, Adult Swim is poised to debut an exciting new anime series titled Lazarus, created by the legendary Shinichirō Watanabe, known for his groundbreaking work on Cowboy Bebop.

Lazarus, (2025) | MAPPA, Sola Entertainment, Shinichiro Watanabe

The Plot

Set in the year 2052, Lazarus follows the story of a miracle drug called Hapuna, discovered by Dr. Skinner. Initially hailed as a cure-all, the drug is later revealed to have deadly side effects, with a three-year half-life that leads to the death of those who took it. As panic spreads, a task force of five agents is assembled to locate Skinner and find a vaccine.

The Creative Team

The series boasts an impressive, well-versed creative team. Animation is handled by MAPPA, the studio behind hits like Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan, while Sola Entertainment handles production. The action sequences are designed by Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick film franchise, ensuring high-octane, stylish choreography.

Additionally, the music is composed by jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, along with producers Floating Points and Bonobo, adding a unique and moody soundtrack to the series.

What to Expect

The first trailer, released at the Adult Swim Festival's "Toonami on the Green" event, sets the tone for the series with its stylish animation and fluid action sequences — very similar to Cowboy Bebop, but with a Mirror’s Edge twist.

The trailer specifically features a prison break sequence, giving a glimpse of the smooth, jazzy action that fans can expect. The protagonist, a slick and tough young man with wavy black hair and sharp eyes, embodies the cool, edgy style characteristic of Watanabe's incomparable protagonists.

Eager Anticipation

With its blend of sci-fi intrigue, high-stakes action, and a compelling storyline, Lazarus has quickly become one of the most eagerly awaited anime series of the year. Fans of Cowboy Bebop and newcomers alike are counting down the days to the premiere, ready to immerse themselves in Watanabe's signature style and storytelling once more.

As we look forward to the release of Lazarus, it's clear that this series will be a must-watch for anime enthusiasts and anyone looking for a gripping, action-packed adventure.
